They say good things happen to those that wait patiently for them. After he dismissively asked me to leave his office, I went back to my own office to try to finish a few of the tasks that were on my table.
I had totally forgotten to get lunch because I was too busy thinking about how he spoke to me that I lost track of time and it was already past lunch time.
By this time, my stomach was starting to growl. It only made sense to go get something to eat, so I shut down my system and took a short walk to a restaurant close to the office.
I ordered my favourite meal. Spaghetti and chicken just as I was about to start eating Jame walked into the restaurant.
To say I was shocked would be an understatement. He turned towards my direction and took two strides towards me and had a smile on his face. I mean an actual smile.
I can’t categorically say that I have seen him smile ever since I started working at this company.
Hello, Miss Temitayo, Is the seat free or are you expecting someone? You can already guess my response, ehen? So he repeated himself, probably assuming that my response was because I didn’t hear him well. Is the seat in front of you free or not?
I mean, I can only avoid answering his question for so long. I told him no, I’m not going to let him stand in front of me looking like a dumbass (lmao)… the seat is free and you are free to use it if you want. It’s not like I was going to let this opportunity pass me by.
For about 5 minutes, he just kind of stared at me without saying a word, which was making me a bit uneasy. The situation was getting really uncomfortable with me just looking at my food without eating it.
Finally, he decided to break the silence by telling me to eat my food. Seriously, who does that? Are mine 2 or something? I mean, this man is so confusing. And who the hell gave him permission to come sit with me? Seriously, there are like 10 more available seats that he could have taken.
After he requested that I continue my food, I just couldn’t break eye contact with him. You could get lost in his eyes. He said the funniest thing I’ve heard him say.
It’s not like I’ve ever had a conversation with him before, apart from today’s short scolding and the occasional good morning when we walk past each other in the office.
He said, “Do you know that they call me the awkward king at the office?” I sincerely didn’t know when I busted into laughter.
So you find that funny, right? He asked, and might I add, you have a very beautiful laugh. At this point, I was already grinning from ear to ear. Like, how did we go from complete silence to filtering? This man—he is truly something else.
At first he wasn’t sure about what to order, so I suggested he order the same as mine, which he eventually did, and a small conversation started from there about how settling into the office had been and if I was having any difficulties at all.
It would have been very easy for me to tell him that he was my biggest problem in that office at the moment, but that would have been very rude. The gentleman was just trying to be nice and all. So I told him “Big Fat No”.
