Sex workers include female, male and transgender people who receive money or goods in exchange for sexual services, either regularly or occasionally. They might be refer to as harlot sometimes.

Sex work varies between and within countries and communities and varies in the degree to which it is more or less “formal” or organized, and in the degree to which it is distinct from other social and sexual relationships.

In most cases, they are organized and controlled by managers who act as power-holding intermediaries between the sex worker and client, and often between both and local authorities. While on the other hand, sex workers can work independently.

The settings in which sex work may occur range from brothels or other dedicated establishments to roadsides, petrol stations, parks, hotels, bars, restaurants, and private homes, and maybe recognizable or hidden.

Sex workers primarily don’t have a specific client base, as they generally go in favor of the highest bidder or a client they smell to be rich.

They won’t give in to a client just because they love their client. It’s strictly business! Even if it’s having a client far below their age for the night, it’s game to them.

Why are people calling them sex workers?

They are called sex workers because they go into informed sexual activities just for their personal gains, nothing more.

Why use the term “sex worker” rather than “prostitute”?

The term “sex worker” recognizes that sex work is work. Prostitution, on the other hand, has connotations of immorality. Many people who sell sexual services prefer the term “sex worker” and find “prostitute” demeaning and stigmatizing

How do people find themselves self-doing this?

Generally, in Africa, most people go into sex work because of non-employment, poverty, and lack of appropriate care from parents. Sex work isn’t a dream job anymore, but some find themself in the industry!

Some complex factors may also contribute to entry into sex work. Trafficking is one of the ways by which people find themself in sex work.

It’s the denial of practically all human rights L.e the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring of persons, through threat or use of violence or other forms of intimidation to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for exploitation.

Girls are the prime victims of trafficking for sex work, although a smaller number of boys are also trafficked into sex work.

Can this market go into extinction very soon?

This speaks specifically to the clients. The clients of a sex worker reflect a cross-section of the population, representing all ages, economic classes, and ethnic backgrounds.

If a company produces goods that are of no value to the market, definitely, the company is bound to fold up. The same thing applies to sex workers, if the demand for sex daily in low, they would definitely look elsewhere for a job. So, it’s a question of if the demand for sex workers would drop.

How society does look at sex workers?

Sex work reflects the economic inequality in society, is a form of exploitation that traps women in economic dependency on men because of material inequalities. Worse, it tends strongly to produce further imbalances; material, social, and political in nature. It encourages men to view women merely as commodities.
