You are about to take on a formidable task. You are getting your first makeup kit; your courage deserves applause. This means that you have studied the intricacies of the makeup art and are fully ready to try it on yourself.

You have probably followed your favorite beauty influencers for weeks online, mastering their techniques. However, before you move to buy all the items they may have suggested, advertised, or used, here is a word of advice: no matter how tempting it may be to buy all those products, do yourself a favor and stick to the basics.

You may think you have gotten a handle on how to use them all, but sometimes, it is best to start simple. You can buy all the color correctors and shiny makeup you want when you have mastered that. However, for now, let us focus on the bare minimum.

What should be in your beginner’s makeup kit?

  1. Face Primer: This is an absolute must. This magical potion helps to create an even base for your face makeup. It helps it last and ensures your makeup does not crack, smudge, or fade away. There are various primers out there, and you should understand the sort of primer your skin needs. Every skin is different; therefore, your favorite influencer’s primer may not be the one for you.
  2. Foundation: The name alone says it all. Excluding your primer, this is the base of your whole art. This helps you attain a flawless, even complexion. You can choose to go with or without a foundation, but let us not get ahead of ourselves. For a beginner, you should use one.
  3. Concealer: Years ago, this would not have been included in the list, but times are changing; therefore, we must change with it. You need this to better hide the bags under your eyes or if your blemishes need extra coverage.
  4. Pressed Powder: This helps oil control. Our skin gets oily as the day progresses, so the powder inhibits all that oiliness. You could also use a setting powder, but the results of this could be disastrous if not done correctly. For a beginner, pressed powder is best.
  5. Blush/Bronzer: This adds color and just the right amount of sparkle to your whole look. These products are typically added to the sides of your face or the apple of your cheeks.
  6. Eyeshadow palette: This can be intimidating, but you do not have to understand all the ‘cut creases’ and color combos to add a small quantity of glam to your eyes. You can start by dabbing a shiny nude color matching your skin tone or outfit to your lids. With time, your eye shadow skills will advance tremendously.
  7. Mascara: This should do the trick because you may need to gain the skills to attach lashes to your eyes. It gives the illusion of dark and full lashes, framing your eyes and making them stand out.
  8. Lip gloss/Lipstick: You can only do your makeup with one of these on. That means you did nothing at all.

Many tricks come with the art of makeup. Stay aware of all the highlighting and contouring. In time, you will learn what works best for you.
