Menopause is the permanent cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycle and the end of fertility. As you get close to menopause, you might experience hormonal changes. Your ovaries stop releasing eggs at this stage, estrogen levels reduce, and it becomes difficult to predict your menstrual cycle.
Postmenopausal bleeding (vaginal bleeding) is when you bleed after menopause. If you have this experience one year after menopause, you need to speak directly to a gynecologists for medical examination.
Postmenopausal vaginal bleeding causes; vaginal dryness, thickening of the uterus lining, fibroid, cancer or abnormal growth in the vaginal, cervix, pelvic and uterus.
These are signs that call for concern and they can be cured easily, but if bleeding persists after treatment, reach out to an obstetrician-gynaecologist to investigate any abnormal growth in the reproductive organs.
Postmenopausal treatment depends on the causes; it is usually treated with medications like antibiotics, lubricant, hormone progesterone and surgery.
You may experience bleeding during or after sex due to the dryness of the vaginal after menopause; the use of lubrication during sex can help resolve the bleeding.
There is the possibility that the lining of your uterus is thick which can lead to cancer cells. In this case, an ultrasound of the pelvis, cervix, uterus, endometrium and ovaries should be performed to get an image of the abnormalities in those areas.
When you experience these symptoms, seek a medical practitioner’s help for proper diagnosis and treatment.
