How to Fight Pimples and Acne

Pimples and acne can be frustrating for people of all ages. The battle against them involves a combination of proper skin care, dietary choices, and lifestyle adjustments. 

Acne and pimples occur when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. This results in redness, swelling, and pus-filled lacerations that can be off-putting. 

How to Fight Pimples and Acne

1. Proper Skin Cleansing: Proper skin cleansing prevents and manages pimples and acne. Wash your face by cleansing. This should be done in the morning and night using a gentle cleanser. Avoid harsh scrubbing, as it can irritate the skin.

2. Apply Sunscreen: Always wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from UV damage. Some acne treatments, like Retinoids, can increase skin sensitivity to the sun.

3. Diet: What you eat can affect your skin. Do the following to reduce the chances of pimples and acne:

  •   Reduce Sugar Intake: High sugar consumption can lead to insulin spikes, thus increasing sebum production. 
  • Limit Dairy Products: some types of milk (mainly dairy) may exacerbate acne in specific individuals. Try cutting out this type and going for acne-friendly ones like Almond or Coconut milk.  

4. Hydration: Drinking adequate water to maintain healthy skin. Women (2.7L) and men (3.7L) are the recommended quantity. Aim to take at least eight glasses of water daily if you cannot measure.

5. Keep your hands to yourself: Avoid touching your face with your hands, as this could transfer bacteria and germs. Also, avoid popping your pimples as it may cause scarring and inflammation.

6. Use Oil-Free and Non-Comedogenic Cosmetics: If you wear makeup or skincare products, opt for “oil-free” and “non-comedogenic.” These products are less likely to clog your pores.

7. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can trigger acne outbreaks. Explore stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, or hobbies you enjoy.

8. Acne-treating Products: Over-the-counter acne treatments, like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur-based products, can be effective for mild acne. They can help unclog pores and reduce bacteria on the skin. 

9. Consult a Dermatologist:  probably the first thing on the list (mainly) for people with moderate or severe acne. This is so that they create personalized treatment plans for you.
