For the time being memorial, music has been a solace for many. In fact, till now it is hard to believe or to find those who have no love for music at all; this is not to say there are none but to say they are few.

What then is Music?

According to Merriam Webster dictionary; Music is the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity Vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony.

Music is the art of arranging sounds in time to produce a composition through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. It is one of the universal cultural aspects of all human societies.

Music is food to the soul; it is in itself a healing tool.

We all as individuals have a deep connection to music because it is ‘hardwired in our brains and bodies, the elements of music – rhythm, melody, etc. – are echoed in our physiology, functioning, and being.

Knowing the intense connection we have with music, it is clearly not surprising that various studies have shown that music can benefit our mental health.

How then does music help us?

Music is capable of lifting our moods, combating depression, improving blood flow in ways similar to statins, lowering levels of stress-related hormones such as cortisol, and easing pain.

Music has healing power. It has the ability to take you out of yourself and take you around the world.

Music has the power to uncover your innate abilities, things that are buried inside of you that you never knew. It makes you feel emotional and vibrant.

Music can help aid memory recall. Studies show that regular musical leisure activities can have long-term cognitive, emotional, and social benefits in mild/moderate dementia and could therefore be utilized in dementia care and rehabilitation.

Music opens you up to creativity.

Music is a necessity whether we like to agree to it or not. It is an important part of our life that we can never overlook, so the next time you are listening to music and dancing be rest assured that you are gaining some health benefits.
