Although a shifting sex drive is a natural aspect of life, some women suffer from hypoactive sexual desire disease (HSDD).
It’s characterized as a mental and physical sexual dysfunction in which women lose the drive or desire to have sex for at least six months, producing self-distress or relationship problems (or both).
HSDD affects about ten per cent of women. The illness has the potential to negatively impact a woman’s quality of life and mental health. An imbalance in the brain’s neuronal pathways is thought to be the cause of HSDD.
Women are at risk for HSDD due to several circumstances, including:

What is the mechanism behind it?
According to Dr Puja Uppal, a board-certified family medicine physician and the chief medical officer at Think Healthy, both Addyi and Vyleesi function differently than Viagra.
- Addyi
Sprout Pharmaceuticals’ Addyi is a multimodal serotonergic drug that was initially developed for the treatment of the severe depressive disorder. Addyi, unlike Viagra, works on the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, rather than on the organs of men.
- Vyleesi
The Vyleesi injectable belongs to a group of drugs known as melanocortin receptor agonists.
“It’s injectable and helps to modify sexual function by activating our melanocortin receptor 4 (MCRs),” adds Uppal.
Is it effective?
Both medications have demonstrated some efficacy in clinical trials, but their long-term effects are unknown.
Addyi was rejected twice by the FDA before being approved. It was formerly rejected because it was no better than a placebo. The second time was due to worries about safety. According to certain research, roughly 10% of women with HSDD experience a difference after using Addyi.
