According to the World Health Organization, it is “a condition of well-being in which the individual realizes their potential, can cope with challenges and enjoys a sense of well-being. the usual demands of life can work successfully and fruitfully and can contribute to his or her community.

When we talk about mental health, we’re referring to both internal and external elements that influence an individual’s emotional health and well-being. When we talk about “mental health concerns,” diseases, or disorders, we’re talking about conditions that affect a person’s mood, way of thinking, and coping.

So, why is it so critical to look after your mental health? As we can see from our definition, it’s a topic with far-reaching ramifications. Taking care of your mental health may influence your happiness, relationships, resilience, and a variety of other aspects.

1. Ask for help when you need it.

When you’re having trouble with your mental health, the first step is to get help. Whether it’s chatting with a loved one or seeking help from a medical expert, obtaining aid when you need it is a vital first step.

2. Talk about your feelings.

Talking about your feelings could help you maintain excellent mental health and cope with difficult situations. Expressing your feelings is not a sign of weakness. It’s part of taking care of your health and doing everything you can to stay healthy.

Talking may assist you in dealing with a problem that has been bothering you for a long time. Just being heard can make you feel more supported and less alone. It also works both ways. If you are yourself, you may inspire others to do the same.

3. Participate in things that you enjoy.

Continue to engage in things that are significant and pleasurable to you, such as cooking for yourself or loved ones, playing with your pet, strolling in the park, reading a book, or watching a film or TV series.  

Maintaining excellent mental health requires a regular schedule filled with things that make you joyful.

 4. Eat healthily.

Consume a well-balanced, healthy diet and limit your use of alcohol and drugs.

Every year, more and more studies linking nutrition to mental health are published. Poor diets and unhealthy eating may have a detrimental influence on your physical health, which can then hurt your mental health, but even unhealthy food can make you feel worse.   

Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet rich in fats, fibre, and nutrients will help you manage your stress and anxiety, improve your sleep, improve your ability to concentrate and make you feel better overall. 

Another important factor in enhancing your mental health is limiting your use of alcohol and/or drugs.

5. Get enough sleep.

Make a determined effort to get to bed at a consistent, early hour.

Sleep has been connected to a variety of physical and mental health implications. While some psychological or psychiatric difficulties may cause sleep problems, a lack of sleep can also worsen pre-existing conditions such as sadness, stress, and anxiety.   

Getting adequate sleep every night and going to bed early or at a decent hour is a good approach to living a healthy, happy life.

Be kind to yourself. Work on not comparing yourself to others, don’t worry about what others think of you and permit yourself to make errors. When you sense your thoughts wandering, try to catch yourself and offer yourself some love.
