Mother: Ha! No wonder you haven’t been able to conceive! You mean you go and urinate after sex!

Wife: (look on)

Mother: When you are with your husband, learn to lie down so that it would settle and my grandson would come. Why are you rushing to the toilet! Do you want his labour to be in vain!

Wife: (dumbfounded) mama, I have heard you.

Especially for people looking forward to embarking on the nine-month journey, you might have heard that when you urinate after sex, it reduces your chances of becoming pregnant. Because when you do so, it is believed that the urine would flush the sperm out.

Peeing after sex is beneficial. This is because peeing flushes bacteria out of the body, which may help prevent a urinary tract from developing.

If you are prone to developing urinary traction infections (UTIs), then peeing within thirty minutes after sex might be helpful, although it hasn’t been proven, it appears to work for many women.

“A urinary traction infection (UTIs) is a very common type of infection in your urinary system. A UTI can involve any part of your urinary system, including the urethra, ureters, bladder and kidneys.

Symptoms typically include needing to urinate often, having pain when urinating and feeling pain in your side or lower back.”

The reason why doctors ask women to urinate within 30 minutes after sex is because it may help to protect women from UTIs (Urinary tract infections).

When bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra (where women urinate from) and travel up to the bladder, it leads to urinal tract infections.

Women are up to 30 times likely to develop a UTI than males. This is due to two reasons: First, the female urethra is close to the vagina and anus.

This means that bacteria can easily spread from these areas to the urethra. Secondly, the urethra is shorter in females than it is in males. This means that bacteria that enter the urethra can reach the bladder more easily.

According to a doctor, Tolu Binutu, since the urethra is close to the vagina and so it is easy for bacteria to gather close to the urethra during sex. Urinating can help to “flush” these bacteria & reduce the risk of UTI.

He explained that there are two openings or “holes” in the vulva – The Urethra and the Vagina.

The Vagina receives the Penis (and semen) during sex. When you urinate, it comes out of the Urethra and not the vagina. If semen has entered the vagina, there’s no going back. Sperm is already travelling upward to try and fertilize an egg.

Therefore, urinating after sex won’t push sperm out of the vagina. So women who are trying to get pregnant can still carry out the practice. Birth control and infertility are the ways to prevent pregnancy.

Let’s also note that Peeing after sex does not prevent sexually transmitted infections. Using a condom or other form of barrier contraceptives during sex can help to reduce the risk of STIs.

If people are struggling to pee after sex, drinking a glass or two of water may help. A larger amount of urine will also be more effective in flushing out bacteria.
