HMO is a health maintenance organization, and it is a type of health insurance that hires or contracts health care services at an often reduced cost to a network of physicians or medical groups.

They are usually more affordable compared to the other types of health insurance. Although they have the choice of where to go and who they choose to see.

But before going ahead to choose a plan, you need to know how they work and why it might be important for you.

HMO plans don’t always require claim forms to see a doctor or during hospital stays, and this is a major reason why many choose HMOs insurance plans.

The HMO member simply has to present a card that states proof of insurance at the doctor’s office or hospital. It is also important for you to know that an HMO member may have to wait longer for an appointment than with an indemnity insurance plan.

HMO charges are fixed and they are usually in form of a monthly fee so its members can receive health care.  The payment involves a  co-payment fee for each doctor visit; however, with the HMO, fees can be forecasted, unlike a fee-for-service insurance plan.

The HMO insurance plan takes away the freedom of choice but then, out-of-pocket expenses are very low.

Some other information you should know about the HMO insurance plan is that the premium that is paid is only enough to cover the costs of doctors in the network.

This would usually leave members “stuck” to a primary care physician and if managed care plans change, then the member may not be able to continue with the same PCP.

This also makes it very difficult to get specialized care because the members must get a referral first.  Any kind of care that is sought that is not a referral or an emergency is not covered.

The HMO plan is one of the fastest-growing types of managed care in terms of expenses while being the most restrictive type of health care.
