“Vaginal tobacco” is a popular practice in West Africa, it is said to shrink the genitals, and increase the odds of getting pregnant.
“Vaginal tobacco” is prevalent in Senegal, where the “miracle substance” for “increasing sexual pleasure tenfold” or “sending your man into the seventh heaven” is sold.
The products are made from dried tobacco leaves called “tongora2 or native plants such as “kankouran mano” or Koundinding.”Many who have to use the products complained that they felt a burning sensation followed by severe dizziness, vomiting and even loss of consciousness.
A report in the BBC newspaper revealed how some Tanzanian women are applying tobacco to their pubic areas to prevent them from having sexual urges. The tobacco application act as a family planning method for some of these Tanzanian people.
“When I put the tobacco (in privates) I feel like I have been with a man. Even if a man makes a move at me, I feel like he’s just a nuisance.
“An old woman told me to special to mix the ground tobacco (ugoro) with soda ash (Magadi) before mixing it with cooking oil. When placed, the urge to have sex ceases,” Asha said.
Asha explained that tobacco is mostly used by divorced women, widows or those husbands who are away for a long.
However, a gynaecologist, Dr Abduoulaye Diop believes that it only gives women the sensation their genitals are shrinking because the chemicals cause vaginal muscles to retract.
“This feeling is transient and misleading because the vaginal mucosa that is attacked will eventually develop changes that are the gateway to cancer.”
Another expert said applying tobacco products into the pubic area “often create ulcers which by scarring, shrink the vagina, make it hard and can go as far as to close it completely. And it can even make the normal flow of menstruation impossible.”
Another warns that no real effect on libido or fertility can cause scarring and scarring the vaginal opening to “close up.” This is believed to raise the risk of cancer and stillbirth and cause difficulties with periods.
