What Happens on Day 10 of the Menstrual Cycle

Despite experiencing menstruation for years, many women still have questions about their bodies and this complex cycle. Understanding the intricate workings within can be empowering.

Your very first period starts your first menstrual cycle. It typically lacks structure, but with time, it evens out and becomes more structured.

The first step to understanding your complex cycle is understanding the difference between a menstrual cycle and menstruation.

Menstruation: This is the actual period of bleeding that typically lasts 2-8 days. It’s the shedding of the uterine lining if pregnancy hasn’t occurred.

Menstrual Cycle: Menstrual cycles are controlled by the hormones progesterone and estrogen that prepare your body for pregnancy. The cycle lasts from 24 – 35 days, averaging 28 days. The first day of your period marks the beginning of a menstrual cycle, and this cycle lasts until the day before the start of a new period.

Knowing every little detail of your menstrual cycle can help you manage and understand your symptoms, prepare for an upcoming period, and give insights on the best time to conceive or avoid pregnancy.

Your menstrual cycle is divided into two phases: the follicular and luteal phases. The follicular phase encompasses the 1st to around the 14th day of your period, while the luteal phase begins after ovulation and lasts until the first day of your next period.

Here is a detailed breakdown by day

Day 1 to 3– day 1 is the first day of period bleeding unless you are pregnant. The first three days consist of heavy bleeding.  The estrogen levels are at the lowest.

If you are bleeding heavier than usual, that is, blowing through a pad almost hourly, it is best to consult a doctor.

Day 4 is slightly lighter, and the color goes from red to brown. This coloring lasts up to 7 days for women with 7-day periods. Estrogen levels rise as your body prepares for ovulation/ egg implants.

What Happens on Day 10 of the Menstrual Cycle?

Estrogen levels are almost at the peak as your body prepares for potential pregnancy. This period is part of the follicular phase as follicles responsible for pregnancy start to grow. The endometrial lining thickens, and cervical mucus changes to enhance fertility.

Serotonin is typically high, and you might feel better than you did during your period. The follicular phase ends at this point, and the body starts ovulation.

When something may be wrong

Pay attention to the normal process above, and something may be wrong if:

  • You are not pregnant, and your period has been absent for three months or more or if it is irregular.
  • Your cycle is less than 21 days or more than 35 days
  • Your period is more than 7 days
  • Your cramps are debilitating
  • You change tampons hourly

And much more; the list is exhaustive, and you know your body best, so if you think something is wrong, please consult your doctor.
