Traditional Marriage Cakes Design For Couples
Every wedding has to have a wedding cake. A cake or cupcake (the couple’s choice, of course) is a must-have for any wedding celebration, and Nigerian traditional weddings are no exception.
In the past, cake cutting was not customary at traditional Nigerian marriages. However, it is no longer the case.
The modern twist on traditional weddings is cutting a cake during the ceremony.
When planning your traditional ceremony, Igbo, Yoruba, Edo, Bini, Hausa, or Efik brides-to-be must think about having a cake. There are countless variations in shapes and sizes for a classic wedding cake.
Dolls fashioned like the bride and groom and outfitted exactly like them are frequently seen. Although the couple can keep these figurines as a memento of their wedding day, they are also tasty.
In Nigeria, mini-me cake decorating is a common trend across all the tribes and ethnic groups.

These cakes are going to be divided according to their tribes and significance.
- Igbo Traditional Cake
Igbo traditional wedding cakes sometimes have decorations fashioned from objects that are significant to Igbo culture.
Some of them are large edible pots, for example, that are filled with kola nuts that appear quite natural and enticing, and something that mimics various Nigerian gourds with their usual stuffing!
These cakes often only have the surface where the gourd is placed as additional embellishment.
It’s not a strict restriction, though, and you sometimes come across large cakes with vibrant decorations of this kind.
The cost of these sets of cakes varies according to size, customization, and vendor. However, note that the price will be nothing less than N50,000.
–Palm wine: A customary beverage prepared from palm sap, palm wine represents festivity and hospitality.
–Kolanuts: Presented frequently during celebrations, these hold great cultural significance for the Igbo people.
-Coral beads are significant both spiritually and culturally.

- Yoruba Traditional Cakes
Cake for Engagement: “Akara Oyibo”
Without the engagement cake, or “Akara Oyibo,” a Yoruba traditional wedding ceremony is incomplete. This unique cake is designed to represent various aspects of Yoruba culture, including:
–A talking drum: A representation of celebration and song.
–A calabash: A symbol of custom and history.
-A cake topper showing the couple dressed in traditional Yoruba clothing.
Before cutting the cake, the cake decorator usually tells the guests a little bit about the cake. The traditional Yoruba wedding cake normally costs about N50,000, though the cost can change depending on the design and materials.
- Hausa Traditional Cakes
Unlike the more intricate and drawn-out processes observed in Igbo and Yoruba traditions, the Hausa traditional marriage is based mostly on Islamic rites. However, it is now common in modern days that some Hausa couples still celebrate and cut a cake at the end of the rites.
These cake designs can be decorated according to the taste of the couple, suiting their colour codes, venue, and fitting the theme of the wedding. The cost of a Hausa traditional cake is N70,000 and above.
Other traditions also have their designs and features, however, these are just the few selected ones with the major tribes in Nigeria.
