Most people agree that the bedroom is a personal haven, a space in which one can relax, turn off the outside world and retreat from all the stresses of our frenzied daily existence.

There are some things that you shouldn’t be doing in your bedroom, but most people don’t know what they are. You probably have seen these items in your bedroom without even knowing it.

These are the top most common things that you shouldn’t be doing in your bedroom.

1. Food

If you’re anything like me, you love food. No food in the bedroom. Ever. It may sound obvious, but you wouldn’t believe how many people have told me they have food in their bedrooms.

When I think about my ideal day, I think about eating lots of it. Having your meals or edibles on the bed is very dirty because you will most likely not wash your hands after the meal and also not wash your sheets if something spills on them.

Eating in bed is most times associated with another activity like watching tv or reading, this might lead to overeating and puts you at risk of indigestion. Leaving dirty dishes in the room as well attract pests.

Not only does this leave you susceptible to bugs, but it also means there is potential for mould and mildew to grow on your food which can cause all sorts of health problems.

2. An uncomfortable mattress and bed linens

This suggestion is by far the most important. We would go as far as to say that it is impossible to have a good, truly rejuvenating night’s sleep in an uncomfortable bed.

3. TV

The bedroom is for relaxing. If you’re thinking of relocating a TV to your bedroom, think again. It is quite a huge distraction.

It can completely deprive you of sleep. How are you going to relax and wind down if you have a TV in your bedroom? To get comfortable and sleep soundly, you need to have a distraction-free environment.

4. Mobile phone

According to HuffPost, the blue light emission from cell phones can disturb melatonin production, thereby causing poor sleep patterns.

The incessant vibration and ringing of phones as well as the ever-present social media distractions are harmful to your health.

Constant phone notifications, getting stressed out over the news you’re reading online, social media-related worries, and general information overload don’t contribute to getting a consistently restful night of sleep.

5. Pets

Generally, pets can be major distractors to your sleep given their playful nature. They might also mess up the room if they are not well trained yet and this may lead to germs, fleas, etc.

7. Exercise equipment:

It might seem quite convenient to have your gym equipment easily accessible, right there in your bedroom. Keeping exercise equipment in the bedroom is something you should avoid.

Working out before bed can make it harder for you to sleep and if you haven’t been keeping up with your workouts, seeing the equipment daily would make you feel guilty.

8. Workspace

Many of us are guilty of this. Boundaries matter, set up a dedicated home workspace, like a home office.
