  1. Never leave your hair dry. If you are on wigs, extensions, or low cuts, ensure that you oil your hair at least once a week. On wash days, you can warm up mix essential oil, for instance, castor oil with coconut oil, and massage into your scalp.
  2. Trim your hair. You can do this quarterly or twice a year to get rid of split ends and give your hair a bouncy and healthy look.
  3. Do not tie your hair uptight often. What this does is pull on your scalp and edges and it can also cause breakage. Ensure that you make your hair as often as you give it time to breathe.
  4. Do not expose your hair to too much heat and do not use products that contain too much alcohol. This damages your scalp and causes hair breakage. Also, when you go out on sunny days, ensure to wear a hat or a covering over your head.
  5. Always wash your hair with cool or warm water according to the instructions on the product you use.
  6. Always use products that are tailored for your hair. Fine and soft hair shouldn’t use a relaxer that was made for thick and full hair.

Having discussed general rules, let’s talk about various hair types. The Nigerian woman’s hair is afro-textured. Therefore, the same routine applies to all 4 hair types.

Type 4 haircare routine tips:

  1. Use a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo, you don’t want to use a shampoo that will strip your hair of its natural oils and cause your hair to be dry. Shampoo your hair at least once a month.
  2. Deep condition your hair: Deep-condition your hair on wash days and apply conditioner before styling. This process ensures that moisture returns to and is locked into your hair.
  3. Try using hair butter and creams instead of oils. Creams are less light than oils and lotions and penetrate each strand of your hair and retain longer in your hair.
  4. Be gentle with your hair when you brush and comb it. Use a detangling shampoo and a wide-tooth comb on your wash days. You do not want to cause your hair to break and tangle. You could first detangle with your fingers and then with a wide-tooth comb
  5. Always wear protective hairstyles. They are the best for your scalp in preventing receding edges, and they ensure that you don’t have hair breakage.

Bonus tips:

Use a satin cap instead of using a hairnet.

Comb each row as you loosen your hair, it reduces the tangle.

Care for your hair according to the season and your age. The hair care routine during winter should include locking in moisture. These should be done less during the rainy season. The truth is that hair texture changes due to these factors.

Above all, be intentional, go for the best hair care routine that suits you. You will get better results.
