Marriage registries in Nigeria perform statutory marriages between a man and a woman, otherwise known as court weddings, and this is a monogamous union.
The various marriage registries in the country are all regulated by the Nigerian Marriage Act, Cap 218, Laws of the Federation, 1990.
The country currently has marriage registries located in many parts of the federation, and about seven (7) of them are currently operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The Ministry has been given the responsibility to grant licenses to qualified places of worship as well as LGAs that are compiled with the provisions of the Act (Sections 4(2) & (5) of the Marriage Act)
