Maintaining clean and healthy toilet hygiene is not negotiable, especially for those with kids. The toilet is one of the most uninteresting but inevitable household chores you need to pay attention to. If those you employed to do the job is not doing it well, aunty/uncle, get in there and scrub your toilet!!

Keeping your toilet always clean from germs should be a task to be done more than two times a week as this will not only keep you and your family healthy but also give visitors a good impression of you.

Below are some of the suggestions on how to ensure a clean toilet:

  1. Ensure you flush after use and encourage everyone at home to also do the same always.
  2. Never flush solid objects or hard paper down the toilet as this can cause blockage along the toilet line.
  3. As a safety measure, put a trash can beside your toilet seat to always remind users that non-toilet friendly materials can be trashed in it.
  4. Get a non-toxic cleaning agent to scrub your toilet
  5. Use toilet slipper always
  6. Avoid urinating or spitting on the toilet floor
  7. Make sure you always check for water before using the toilet.
  8. Sometimes, open your toilet window to direct sunlight (If this is possible though, depending on your house structural design)

Five Toilet Habits You Can Start Today

1. Avoid using your mobile phone in the toilet

Most texts, emails, calls and games etc., certainly do not demand attention from you while you spend that 1-5 minutes away. When you bring take your phone inside to the toilet, you are not only less mindful of what’s happening around you, you also risk contaminating the phone with lots of germs and bacteria.

2. Don’t be in a rush to start and finish

A washroom is often a high traffic hotspot with people coming in and out, desperate to start and finish their toilet business as quickly as possible. Many people run and barge into the washroom unexpectedly. This is especially dangerous when young kids are standing behind the door, they could be hurt.

3. Don’t squat on the toilet seat

I don’t still believe that people still squat on the toilet seat. Squatting on the toilet seat or the toilet seat cover not only make the whole place seems dirty, it greatly inconveniences the next user.
You may be at risk of injuring yourself should you fall off while squatting

4. Wash your hands with soap thoroughly, and dry them before heading out

Now, it is quite uncommon to find someone heading straight out of the washroom and not washing their hands after use. If you do not wash your hands, you should be aware that you are capable of spreading diarrheal or any other infections diseases around

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, handwashing with soap and water reduces the number of people who get sick with diarrhoea by 30%. Therefore, do not skip the soap and water even when you are in a hurry!

Washing your hands with soap have its significance. It’s important to kill off germs and bacteria your hands would have been contaminated with from the various bacteria hotspots such as the cubicle door handle and toilet bowl flush etc. Healthy toilet habits and good personal hygiene should be encouraged in workplaces and homes.

5. Shut the lid before flushing

Researchers found that with each flush, germs can be released up to 10 inches above toilet seats. These are the same germs that can transmit infectious diseases.

Not only that, these harmful microbes can land on toilet surfaces when they are dispersed. Experts suggest that before flushing your toilet, shut the lid to prevent the germs from “flying”. This lowers your risk of exposure to harmful germs.

Bottom Line:

Building good toilet hygiene habits takes a lifetime of learning and honing. Caring for yourself in these manners is good for your physical health as well as your mental health.

Let’s get started with the face, the toilet challenge.
