When dogs are not sleeping or being adorable, you will probably find them in some mischief. It may be chewing your shoe, breaking a vase or dragging foreign objects into the house, but in all that they do, we dog lovers cannot help loving them anyway.

We must admit, though, that a dog chewing the bedding is not something we should get used to. They may be our pets, but it is really unsanitary, and we cannot keep washing or buying bedding every time they chew the bed.

Besides, the disaster their chewing leaves behind is enough to leave you livid, especially after a tired day at work. Surely, there must be some way to stop them from chewing the bed right?

Yes, the answer is a definite yes, but first, we have to figure out why they chew the bed.

Why do dogs chew their bed?

Well, this answer may vary from one dog to another. There cannot be just one reason because dogs like people who are different with their different personalities. However, we can try exploring some reasons and figure out if any one of them could be the one. We will also explore solutions for them.

The number one reason could be;

Just Boredom:  We all know how dogs can get, especially the little puppies. They do not like to be idle. They want all your attention, and they always want to play. All that boundless energy in them, yet you expect them to stay still? No way. They are always looking for a source of entertainment. It could be chasing a butterfly, running after fellow puppy friends or ravaging their bed.

Solution:  Set up activities for them which will take up their time. They require both mental and physical stimulation. It could be a playgroup, interactive toys, or games of fetch. Whatever gets them to burn off all that energy and make them happy should work fine.

They could be teething: Just like babies latch onto everything in sight while they are teething, dogs or puppies do the same thing, too. This may be the reason why your dog cannot stop chewing his bed. There are two possible solutions for this;

Solution: Give him loads of chewy toys or give him frozen treats to ease the teething discomfort. A dog stops teething at about six months, so that the chewing phase will last only for a while.

Perhaps they feel anxious: Leaving your dog at home for long periods can cause them anxiety, and when they feel anxious, they take to gnawing their beds.

Solution: Introduce them to being alone gradually for little periods at first. This allows them to get used to your absence. You will find that their chewing will reduce over time.

Finding solutions to your dog’s chewing behaviour is important for their safety. A dog alone at home can choke to death on a bed stuffing if no one is around to help.

Dogs chew their beds for a number of reasons, but with some simple tricks, you can stop that habit.
