An earache is an inconvenience to anyone. Having an earache could be a sign of an ear infection which usually occurs at the middle ear or outer ear. It could also be caused by a change in air pressure when taking off or landing on a plane.
Apart from these, ear infections could be caused by so many other things brought about by bacteria or viruses.
When an earache occurs, it is understandable that you or your child would want it gone as soon as possible. While there are solutions that can cure earaches, they tend to vary depending on the type of earache it is (if it is an outer earache, middle earache or inner).
The best advice for anyone who suffers an earache is to see a doctor as quickly as possible, but in situations where you would want instant relief, here are certain remedies you can try out;
How to stop an earache fast
1. Use a warm compress: A warm compress can quickly reduce an earache. Soak a rag or washcloth in warm water, wring out the excess and press or hold the rag against the hurting ear.
2. Using Fluid drying ear drops: If you have an outer ear infection, getting an over-the-counter fluid frying ear drop should fix it. Mind you, these should not be used if there is a discharge coming out of the ear or in cases where the patient has a ruptured ear. Check with your doctor first before using these ear drops.
3. A saltwater gargle: Add one teaspoon of salt to the water and use it as a mouthwash. This should help reduce any inflammation in your ear. This is used when an earache is related to a swollen throat.
4. Rest: Sleep and adequate rest helps to boost your immune system. This helps your body to fight any infections. While sleeping, make sure you do not sleep on your infected ear. Sleeping on your other ear keeps the infected ear elevated; that way, it’s easier for the infection to drain out. Also, ensure that you keep blankets and hair away from your ear. This allows airflow into the ear, helping it to stay dry and heal faster.
5. Take a painkiller: Pills like Ibuprofen (Advil) or Tylenol can help relieve the pain or the fever that comes with an ear infection. Ensure the painkiller you choose to use is adequate for you or your child.
6. Hydrogen peroxide: Adding a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to your ear could help your ear infection. This may sound dangerous but so far as you do not use too much hydrogen peroxide, it should be fine. Add a few drops of Hydrogen peroxide to your infected ear, let it stay for a couple of minutes, then turn your ear over a sink for the liquid to drain out. Once that is done, rinse off your ear.
These remedies should help with an uncomfortable earache. However, if the earache persists for days and comes with a discharge and a fever, please see a doctor.
