If there is one thing you can bank on, it is that your toilet will flush properly. However, life is not always fair. Toilets clog and can overflow, making issues worse. A toilet that is overflowing!
Toilet problems are never convenient, and no one likes dealing with them. There are, however, some easy things you can do to stop your toilet from overflowing. If the time comes and you are stuck with an overflowing toilet, it is preferable to get it fixed as soon as possible.
That way, you will not have leaks through the ceiling harming other rooms in your house and maybe having to deal with your insurance company.
This article will walk you through the process of stopping a toilet from overflowing.
How to stop toilet overflowing
- The first thing to do is quickly and carefully remove the toilet tank cover and set it aside. Next, reach into the toilet tank and press the flapper (do not worry, the water in the tank is sanitary). The valve is the rubber part located at the bottom center of the tank. This operation will prevent water from entering the bowl, prevent it from overflowing on the sides, and avoid possible backflows.
- Once the flapper is secured, prevent the tank from filling by raising the float, which operates the tank fill valve. When the main water supply is turned off, the water level in the bowl should begin to drop slowly. If the water level returns to normal after about a minute, you should let go of the float and let the bowl fill without worrying about it overflowing. Be sure to keep an eye on the float so you can turn it off if the level starts to get too high.
- If the water level does not begin to fall after approximately a minute, keep the float in place. At the same time, you turn off the water at the toilet supply valve, which is situated near the floor or in the wall behind the toilet – turn it clockwise (to the right) to close it. If you cannot reach the faucet while holding the float, let go of the ball and swiftly turn off the water.
Once the toilet has stopped overflowing:
Put an end to the use of toilets, sinks, and other plumbing devices.
To figure out if you can clear the drain, try using a plunger.
Start with the bathroom fixtures and work your way up to the root of the problem. When checking plumbing fixtures on the upper floors, it helps to have a partner monitoring the lower floors. Otherwise, it is difficult to know if the drains on the upper floors are actually working or just backing up into the lower drains.
If only one toilet is clogged, the problem is likely only in that toilet. However, if several toilets are affected, the system drain may be clogged, or the drain field may be failing.
Stopping an overflowing toilet needs quick thinking and action. Fortunately, if you know how to take care of it, it is not difficult to do.
