One year has gone by after he proposed, and the second is almost here. I was elated when he proposed, after three years of dating, I had imagined it for a long time and he did.

Now I have been wearing this engagement ring for one year and ten months precisely with no idea when we are going to walk down the aisle.

“I doubt he is ready for a long-time commitment and responsibility,” Ego said.

A popular Nigerian artiste has been engaged to his partner for quite some time and they both have a son together. After having two baby mamas, he gave this lady an ‘assurance’ which signifies forever is the deal.

However, the internet was abuzz when the guy was found with another woman, rumour has it that he and his fiancée have split.

This has spurred a question, how long would you rather be engaged? Is two years or more too long?

Someone said, it depends on the plan between myself and my partner, we could have a plan that we want to be engaged for two years probably because we have a project we are working on that needs time. She also said it depends on where both parties are mentally at that point.

Another lady said four years is too long, but two years at most is “still right”.

An expert advised that before deciding to get engaged/accept a proposal ring, you both should have to sit down to discuss their future, career stage, and financial stability.

No two relationships are the same. Some people meet, fall head over heels and love, get engaged and within six months or a year have exchanged marital vows. For others, it takes years to take that leap into marriage and start a family.

When you are in doubt, ask questions. It is valid when you ask your fiancé the ideal amount of time you both are comfortable waiting before taking that big step. Be open and honest about your feeling with your partner.

Some things are worth the wait and others may require compromise. If what you want and his do not align, maybe you need to move on. And that might be hard, but you should not sacrifice precious time with the wrong people.

The duration of your engagement is up to you, ask valid questions, and don’t live in uncertainty.
