Causes of Vaginal Odor During Pregnancy:

  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy hormones like progesterone and estrogen vary greatly throughout gestation. The pH balance of the vagina can be changed by hormonal fluctuations, which can affect vaginal discharge and odour.
  • Increased Vaginal discharge: Known medically as leukorrhea, an increase in vaginal discharge is frequently a result of pregnancy. Usually, this discharge is thin, milky-white, odourless, or smells slightly musky. Nonetheless, variations in the volume or composition of vaginal secretions may be a factor in detectable malodor.
  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV): Those who are expecting have a higher chance of contracting this common vaginal infection, which is defined by an unbalanced bacterial population in the vagina. A fishy smell, thin, greyish-white discharge, and burning or itchy feelings are all possible symptoms of BV.
  • Yeast Infections: During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations and increased vaginal moisture can foster an environment that encourages yeast overgrowth and consequent vaginal yeast infections. A yeast infection can also result in a thick discharge that resembles cottage cheese, itching, irritation, and a yeasty or bread-like smell.
  • Bad Hygiene: Due to physical discomfort or limited movement, pregnancy may make it challenging to maintain proper hygiene practices. Lousy hygiene practices can lead to bacterial overgrowth and vaginal odour. Examples of these practices include infrequent bathing and incorrect wiping methods.
  • Sweat and Heat: During pregnancy, hormonal changes and increased blood flow can cause excessive perspiration, especially in the vaginal area. Sweat can contribute to the growth of bacteria and the production of odours when it comes in contact with moisture and temperature.

Treatment

Abnormal vaginal odour resolves on its own at least one-third of the time, and it is most usually treated with preventive measures. If the odour does not improve on its own, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to address the underlying cause and eliminate the vaginal odour.

Preventive Measures for Vaginal Odour During Pregnancy:

  • Shower regularly and clean your vulva with mild, unscented soap and warm water. 
  • Do not douche, as this can disrupt the pH balance in your vagina, leaving you exposed to infection. 
  • Avoid wearing clothing that is overly tight around your vulva, such as thongs. Instead, use cotton underwear that will not trap heat and moisture.
  • If you are dehydrated, your vagina may smell strongly like ammonia. Without adequate water, the waste in your urine can become highly concentrated and foul-smelling. Water can aid with hydration and reduce odours, so drink a lot of water, up to 8 glasses per day.
  • You should also take extra precautions while using products and objects in and around your vagina. Some personal toys may not be safe to use while pregnant, so consult your care team if you have any concerns about the things you use.

With the changes that occur in your vagina as well as your entire body when pregnant, it is essential to practice proper vaginal hygiene.
