Bipolar disorder is a medical condition that is marked by significant mood swings, such as mania or hypomania and depression. When you are depressed, you may feel gloomy or hopeless and lose interest or enjoyment in most activities.

When your mood changes to mania or hypomania (which is less severe than mania), you may feel ecstatic, energetic, or particularly irritable. These mood swings can impact sleep, energy, activity, judgment, conduct, and cognitive clarity.

Mood swings might occur infrequently or frequently throughout the year. While most people have emotional symptoms between bouts, some do not.

Although bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, you can control your mood swings and other symptoms by sticking to a treatment plan. Bipolar disorder is often treated with medication and psychological counselling (psychotherapy).

Manic Phase Symptoms:

Symptoms of the manic phase include Extreme euphoria, hopefulness, enthusiasm, irritability, wrath, restlessness, agitation, rapid speech, and poor focus.  Increased energy and reduced sleep requirements, High sexual drive, Setting ambitious goals, Paranoia

Depressive Phase Symptoms

During the depressive phase, symptoms may include sadness and sobbing, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt, as well as fatigue and difficulty concentrating and making decisions. Symptoms may also include irritability, increased sleep or sleeplessness, and changes in appetite, resulting in weight gain or reduction, suicidal ideation or attempts.

Causes and Risk Factors

The precise causes of bipolar disorder are not entirely understood but may include genetic predispositions, aberrant brain structure and function, seasonal depression, anxiety problems, and family.

Here are some steps to manage bipolar disorder:

1. Understand the Condition – Educating oneself on bipolar disorder is essential. Understand the symptoms and available treatment choices. 

2. Seek Professional Help: Consult mental health professionals for a treatment plan. 

3. Medication – Medications are essential for bipolar disorder therapy. 

4. Psychotherapy – Psychotherapy is an essential component of the treatment approach. 

5. Support Groups- Joining a support group can help you connect with people experiencing similar issues. 

6. Lifestyle Management—Maintaining a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly helps improve mood stability. 

7. Monitor Your Symptoms—Track mood changes and symptoms to help your doctor adjust your treatment accordingly. 

8. Prepare for Crisis – Create a plan for crisis scenarios.

9. Supporting Partners with Bipolar – If your partner has bipolar disorder, educate yourself on the disorder.
