Prominent Signs of a Pregnant Budgie

Budgies or Parakeets are oviparous animals that produce their young by laying eggs that hatch outside the body.

As such, they cannot be referred to as pregnant because the embryo develops outside the mother’s body. The correct term for this situation is gravid.

Some signs of a pregnant (gravid) budgie may overlap with those of an illness, but by using all the information at your disposal, you should be able to differentiate pregnancy from illness, or you can consult a veterinarian for proper diagnosis.

Regardless, some of the signs of a pregnant (gravid) budgie/parakeet are as follows:

Cere Colour

A budgie’s cere, the area just above the beak.  A Budgie’s core color is naturally blue or off-white (when she is not mating/breeding).

When she is ready to breed, the color changes to blue, and at the peak breeding cycle, it turns a crusty brown.

Nesting /Breeding Box

Budgies enjoy spending time away from the nest, so it might be a sign of pregnancy when they start spending too much time in the nest. Providing a breeding box can make her feel safer and more comfortable.

Without a breeding box, she might become restless and aggressive, particularly around the nest and toward other budgies or even humans.

Enlarged poop

Gravid Budgies do not eat as much when pregnant because the egg is in the abdomen, and there is little space to store much else. Instead, they eat the food regurgitated by their mates.

The reduction in food intake then translates to reduced digestion and excretion.

They will poop less, and the timing is usually far in between, but when they finally do, their poop is more prominent and more complex to pass. The size of the droppings tends to increase as they get closer to laying their eggs.

This situation typically lasts for a few days. If it persists for longer than ten days, it could indicate a problem, and consulting your veterinarian as soon as possible is advisable.

Other signs of a pregnant budgie are slight weight gain, raised articulation, and laying eggs.
