Traditional Values and History of Africa

Africa is unique and diverse as its landmass, Africa is endowed with rich 54 countries. Her cultures are centre on ethnic groups and traditions. African music, art, oral literature all displays the religious and social patterns of its culture.

The influence of European cultures has also provided a taste of uniqueness to the African culture.

Africa is a large continent with many countries and each country with different people following unique traditions. You might not only get lost in the African wilderness but can be lost in her rich cultural practises.

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most-populous continent, after Asia in both cases.

At about 30.3 million km² including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of Earth’s total surface area and 20% of its land area. With 1.3 billion people as of 2018, it accounts for about 16% of the world’s human population—-Wikipedia

Social, Moral and Religious of the Africa Culture

Social values can simply be seen as those beliefs and practices that are practised by any particular society.

Society has a way of dictating the beliefs and practices that are performed either routinely by its members or performed whenever the occasion demands.

Some social values, especially in African society, cannot exactly be separated from religious, moral, political values and so on.

Moral Values: On the other hand, African culture is rooted in strong Moral thoughtfulness. It has customs of various beliefs which every individual ought to keep to level up with the moral standard of an African child and to avoid curses.

Committing adultery as a married person or young adult sleeping with married people, stealing of farmland, properties etc. and other forms of immoral behaviour are strongly dissuaded and whenever a suspected offender denies an offence, in some cases in local villages, he/she can be taken to a soothsayer or made to take an oath for proof of innocence.

Religion Values: Religion in Africa ‘seems‘ to be the root to which every activity revolves, but it’s rather the opposite with the recent Gen X, Y Z generations.

Although the African religious values believe there’s spirituality to any misfortune that happens in life, Arrh, some would say superstitions

The worship of different gods in Africa is one of the uniqueness of some African nations. They hold their religious values in high esteem.

Apart from being a Christian or Muslim, sorcerers, diviners or other forms of idols are seen to mediate between God and man, very intriguing.

Even at that, most idol worshipers are not even ashamed to perform their rituals in broad daylight, which shows the extent to which they value their religion.

Political Values: African society has political institutions with heads of such institutions that are meant to be respected individuals, but the reverse is now the case. Sad!!.

The most alarming happenings in Africa is that the political hierarchy begins with the family, and some of these families are not ready to let go even after years of generational ruling.

In Africa, some set of family linage is believed to hold on to power for generations, they believed they are entitled to such political position forgetting it’s in the right of any citizen to contest for any open public political position in the society.

It’s no rumour that in some African countries, we have had some political head of country be in position for up to 35years (Equatorial Guinea), making it become their birthright, lolz.

In some countries, they rarely have females in sensitive political offices or are allowed to lead a country.

Thank God for Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia who became the first elected female head of state in Africa in 2016.

Hence, concerning political values in Africa, a selfless individual that have the interest to serve the masses should start warming up to take up the mantle of leadership.

With the recent event in Ugandan, power is gradually shifting from the old ones who believed the office belongs to them to the people’s fave.

Economical Values: The economic values of traditional African society are marked by cooperation. The traditional economy which is mainly based on farming, fishing, mining constructions, goldsmith, etc was cooperative.

The synergetic nature of African society is what made two or more individuals pool their resources together and uplift each other economically. When any of them was in difficulty, all members rallied around and helped him or her.

Hence, we can state without fear of contradiction that the economic values of the traditional African society have become the shadow of itself.

It’s now one man for him/her self. Selfishness seen in the political arena has transcended into the economical value of the average African child. God help our generation.

Though, it’s not this aren’t still practised, the rate at which the values escape from the surface of Africa is very loud and alarming.

Economical prosperity is now you able to eat three square meal conveniently, or been alive if you’re not killed. So pathetic!!
