Is It possible to stop period cramps forever?

Before we answer that question, let us understand what period cramps really are. To understand that, you should know what goes on in the uterus during menstruation.

During a menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens, this is in preparation for pregnancy. If a pregnancy fails to occur, the body then sheds that lining that is when a period occurs.

For that lining to be shed, the muscles of the uterus contract and relax in an irregular pattern so as to let the lining detach from the uterus and flow out from the vagina. Those contractions are the period cramps women experience, and they can come with a great deal of pain.

Now that you understand that phenomenon, you should understand that stopping period cramps forever is not exactly possible because that would mean stopping the contractions of your uterus. However, you can stop or alleviate the painful cramps for some time, and this can only be done with the help of your doctor. Unfortunately, no home remedies can stop period pains forever.

If you have particularly painful cramps, this could be due to an underlying health condition. In such situations you can consider some medical procedures to help stop or reduce those period pains.

It is important to note that these methods help only for some time. Also, these methods work more for some women than others. Therefore, there is no guarantee that it will work for you; there is only a possibility. These methods all require the help of a doctor and cannot be self-administered in any way. These methods include:

1. Hormonal contraceptives: These could come in the form of oral tablets, IUD devices (inserted devices) and injections.

Oral contraceptives use hormones to prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs. It is not a method you would choose to stop menstrual cramps if you want to get pregnant. These contraceptives must be taken every day to be effective.

2.  Progestin implants or IUDs: These contain synthetic progesterone and can help stop painful period cramps for about three to five years. That means you will need to see the doctor after that time interval has elapsed for a refill. Progesterone in the form of contraceptive injections only lasts for three months. So, in a year, you will need to see a doctor four times to get your progesterone shot.

If your painful menstrual cramps are a result of an underlying condition, your doctor may suggest one of the following;

Conditions and Possible Treatments

– Endometriosis: when uterine tissue grows in areas outside of the uterus.

Possible Treatments

– Surgery to remove tissues

-Prescribing oral contraceptives

– Fibroid: These tumours grow on the fibrous tissues of the uterus.

Possible Treatments

– Surgery to remove fibroids

– Birth control methods

– Removal of the uterus.
