Living in survival mode is like being in a perpetual state of emergency when every move you make is in response to an external threat. It may be draining and upsetting, leaving you feeling imprisoned and powerless.
We often do not realize that we are in “Survival Mode,” wholly absorbed in the phone, deadlines to meet, shopping lists, complicated relationships, and constant comparisons with others.
However, when the sun rises every morning, we wake up and know that we will have to outrun society to avoid problems and achieve our desires.
The problem is that when the sun rises every morning, society also wakes up and will run faster than us, with new problems to solve and desires to realize.
The good news is that you do not have to stay in survival mode indefinitely. You may begin to move forward and break free from the continual worry and anxiety with the correct mentality and action plan. So, let us dive into how you get out of survival mode.
How to Overcome Survival Mode
It would help if you first acknowledged that you are in it to escape survival mode. Take an honest inventory of your life and current situations, and consider how you have dealt with them.
Consider what is happening right now that may be contributing to feelings of overwhelm, causing you to focus solely on survival. Before making tangible efforts to achieve change, we must understand what happened in your life to bring you to this point.
Seek Help
Another stage in learning to move out of survival mode is seeking help. It is easy to isolate oneself and believe you are alone in this. You are not. Talk to people in real life or look up other people’s stories. There is nothing wrong with asking for help. If you do not need help right now, you could help someone else.
Take charge of your physical health.
Trauma and survival mode both hurt your physical health. Take care of your body to feel healthier. Every night, get plenty of rest. Every day, you should exercise. Eat healthily and abstain from drugs and alcohol. Stress can be reduced by using meditation, yoga, or other relaxation techniques.
Forgive Yourself
Forgive yourself for not meeting your goals or for ‘not accomplishing more.’ In survival mode, you are just concerned with what is immediately in front of you. It is okay if you cannot do more. It is okay to get frustrated but remember; it is not your fault.
Keep a journal and take notes.
Keeping a journal has several scientifically verified benefits. For example, it can aid perception, attention, and stress reduction. You will not believe it, but studies have proven it helps with immune system illnesses and joint discomfort.
Aside from that, please record your awareness throughout the day. Then, in the journal area, note the appropriate day. (Today, I noticed that…) This will assist you in living in awareness mode rather than survival mode.
Get professional assistance
A trauma therapist can assist you if you are unhappy, terrified, and unable to overcome your terrible event, no matter how hard you try. Consult your doctor for guidance and a suitable referral.
