    There are certain situations where we may have been taken advantage of or intimidated due to one circumstance or the other, but when it comes to bullying, we should be smart enough to stand up for ourselves.

    Bullying can be associated with different meanings; it all depends on the context. Bullying is a situation where someone is harmed or intimidation either physically or mentally. It can also be seen as the oppression, belittling or humiliation of a person.

    Bullying is inconsolable, and it must take a very warped-up person to bully someone else. Only a narcissist will have no problems with bullying someone. 

    Never heard of a narcissist before? A narcissist is a person who is overly self-involved and egoistic with the often need of self-admiration. Narcissism is currently registered as a personality disorder under the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

    It may seem like some foreign far, away disease, but… you would be surprised just how many people around you have narcissistic tendencies. Even you may be one. 

    People can show occasional traits of narcissism, but most narcissists do not care about people’s feelings and tend always to want to be the main character in everyone’s story. In other to point out a real narcissist, they must have the following traits and exhibit them very often.

    • Sense of entitlement
    • Lack of empathy
    • Manipulative behaviors
    • Become impatient when things do not go their way
    • Fear of being tagged a failure
    • Insisting they are the best at everything.

    It might be quite difficult for you to stand up to a narcissist due to their manipulative nature, but there are a few ways you could try to defend yourself. 

    How to stop a narcissist from bullying you

    1. Identification: In other to stand up to a narcissist, you have to identify who the narcissist is and their most commonly used traits. There are different types of narcissists and how to deal with them, so it’s essential that you can identify them.
    2.  Gain Knowledge: In other to know how to deal with a narcissist, you have to know more about NPD, how they react, behave, function, and their weaknesses in other to trap them.
    3. Set boundaries: You have to let your boundaries be known to them. Tell them in a non-aggressive, kind, but serious manner. You should also lay out the consequences of them infringing on your space and make sure they understand the seriousness of the situation. 
    4. Practice skills that will keep you calm: A narcissist is someone who loves to get on your nerves, whether indirectly or directly. When you are dealing with a narcissist, it is always advised to keep calm or control all types of emotions because once they know your weakness, they manipulate it for all its worth. 
    5. Boost your self-esteem: Once a narcissist notices that you are now confident and standing up for yourself, they become intimidated and confused and start to wonder what changed. 

    Some other ways to stand up to a narcissist are:

    • Give them limited access to your emotion
    • Get help from a therapist
    • Be unpredictable

    Narcissists are manipulators, and that is what makes them incredibly dangerous. It may be difficult to extricate yourself from their claws, but with this article, you should be able to identify a narcissist when you do meet one and stop them from bullying you.
