Most bedding articles like bed sheets, blankets or even pillowcases, depending on the make or fabric, tend to shed after washing. If you have replaced your blankets so many times due to shedding, this piece of advice will certainly come in handy in the future.

How to stop a blanket from shedding after washing

While there are a few ways you can try to prevent your blankets from shedding, we will start with the most obvious thing to do. Which is;

  1. Buy a non-shed blanket: Blankets made with natural fibers like cotton, wool or fleece are more prone to shedding after washing. If blanket shedding is something you would like to avoid all together, it would be best to go for synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. If you prefer natural fibers, you can opt for silk or linen blankets, all of which have their downsides as well. However, if you prefer the feel of cotton blankets and you’re willing to battle the shedding, there are a few ways to stop the shedding.
  2. You may have to forgo the washing machine: This may not be what you wanted to hear, but it is one of the best ways to prevent your blanket from shedding after washing. The machine wash may be overly aggressive for your blanket. Even the gentle setting may not be as gentle as you think. The best thing to do with blankets prone to shedding, e.g., cotton blankets, is to hand wash them. Hand washing is a gentler alternative and should annihilate the possibility of shedding altogether.
  3. Stay away from Fabric Softeners: We all love how good fabric softeners smell and how soft and cozy they make our clothes feel. However, when it comes to our cotton blankets, consider fabric softeners your worst enemy. Cotton fabric is naturally soft on its own; adding a softener does more damage to your cotton blankets than good. They weaken the cotton fiber, causing them to tear and break, which leads to shedding. So, when washing your cotton blankets, stay away from fabric softeners.
  4. Wash your blankets with cold water: If you are the type who likes to sterilize their bedding with a hot water soak, you have to forgo that step if you would like your cotton blanket to not shed after washing. Hot water, just like fabric softeners, breaks down the fibers of your cotton blankets. Therefore, it would be best to soak or wash your blankets in cool or warm water.
  5. Rinse with Vinegar: Is there a household problem a little vinegar cannot fix? It is the answer to many household fixes. If you add one-quarter of white vinegar to your rinse while washing your blanket, it will not only stop your blanket from shedding lint but it will also help the fabric maintain its form. That means there is a very low possibility of your blankets shedding at all.

There may be other ways to prevent your blanket from shedding, but the few listed above should do just fine. You can use them for any of your bedding or your towels as well.

Conclusion

Do not get frustrated with shedding blankets, everyone knows the best and warmest blankets are the blankets prone to shedding.
