How to Clear Dark Spots on the Face

Dark spots, especially on the face, are primarily harmless and can be very annoying to remove. Unfortunately, it is a phenomenon that no human (especially women) can escape.

If you are human, there will be times that you will have dark patches or spots on your face. So, what do you do in situations like that? Make the best of it by looking for solutions to your problems.

How to Clear Dark Spots on the Face

To address these dark spots, it’s essential to understand their causes and how to prevent them. After all, prevention, they say, is better than cure.

Some common causes of dark spots are hyperpigmentation, scarring, overexposure to sunlight, aging, cuts and burns, irritation, acne, hormonal fluctuations, harsh products, ingrown hair, and much more.

All the factors mentioned above can trigger hyperpigmentation. These factors can cause melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) that lead to pigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces too much melanin (the pigment that gives the skin color) and causes black spots or patches to develop.

To reduce or remove dark spots, consider the following methods:

There are various ways to remove and reduce dark spots on the face, including medical (OTC and otherwise), surgical, and natural remedies.

However, it is essential to note that some ingredients for removing dark spots may harm people with darker skin. This is because the products are indiscriminate and will affect unaffected parts of the body, believing them to be a form of hyperpigmentation.

This can cause unnecessary lighting of areas that should not be lightened or more hyperpigmentation.

  • Sunscreen

An all-encompassing solution is to use sunscreen, whether your hyperpigmentation is caused by overexposure to the sun.

Always protect yourself from the sun’s harsh rays by using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and ensure it is water resistant so it doesn’t get washed off by sweat or water.

  • Hormonal Fluctuation

Dark spots caused by hormonal changes typically do not require any treatment because, most times, after the cause of the imbalance is gone, the skin resets itself.

So, if your dark spots are caused by pregnancy, menstruation, or medication, your skin will most likely return to normal when the underlying cause is addressed. However, consult a professional if needed.

  • Topical treatments

Topical products are products applied to the skin’s surface to help with an ailment, such as dark spots. Over-the-counter (OTC) that can help combat dark spots typically contain ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, retinoids, chemical exfoliants, and vitamin C.

  • Cosmetic Treatments

Cosmetic treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion should be done under the supervision of a professional.

While they typically yield faster results than topical treatments, they may involve a more prolonged recovery due to skin sensitivity.

  • Homemade Remedies:

Homemade remedies or natural ingredients can be effective in clearing dark spots.

Aloe vera, green tea, tomatoes, turmeric, and orange peels are some home remedies you can try.  Aloe vera is the most versatile homemade recipe.

To utilize its healing properties:

  1. Apply it directly to the affected area (morning and night) and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing off.
  2. Get a bag of green tea, soak it in hot water, and apply it to the affected areas on your face.
  3. For tomatoes, make it into a paste and apply it to your face.
  4. Leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

Turmeric must be used with other ingredients for the most effective result. Get a teaspoon of turmeric powder, two teaspoons of milk, and lemon juice. Mix into a paste, apply, and leave for 20 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water.

Additionally, you can recycle orange peels by making juice from them and applying them to dark spots for 20 minutes before rinsing off.

In summary, dark spots are mostly harmless and tend to go on their own if not severe. Still, if you do not want to play the long-term game, you can utilize any of the above remedies or consult your dermatologist.
