In the Yorùba land, it is believed that using kolanut to pray, wards off death and evil occurrences and that is why it is a necessity in most ceremonies.

However, kolanut has been reported to have many health benefits. Kolanut contains caffeine, theobromine and micronutrients such as magnesium, potassium and calcium. Kolanut and kolanut extracts have been considered safe and are used as flavouring agents in a lot of drinks.

Kolanuts may aid digestion by increasing the production of gastric juice which increases the number of digestive enzymes for food breakdown. In Nigeria, some pregnant women ingest kolanut to control nausea.

Kolanut may be beneficial in the treatment of various eye problems or in reducing symptoms drastically.

Kolanut has a high caffeine content which increases metabolism for the release of energy.

Kolanut is sometimes referred to as a cognitive booster. It increases the circulation of oxygen to other parts of the body such as the brain, by increasing the heart rate. Increased level of oxygen in the brain has been connected to higher levels of cognition.
