The Koreans have a handle on the secret of clear glass skin. If you watch Korean dramas, you must have noticed that their skin reflects light. It could be their food or their skin routine, but they also seem to have the secret to anti-ageing.

Take Lee Dong Wook, for example. That man is in his forties and looks nothing like it! What could be the secret?

After some amateur research into the Korean beauty industry, we found that the answer might be proper hydration or Ginseng.

What is Ginseng?

Ginseng is a light-coloured lumpy root that resembles a tiny human being. It has been an everyday skincare staple in East Asia for hundreds of years.

The root can be found in Asia and North America, but the ginseng beauty trend was set by the South Koreans. K-beauty is now the most prominent beauty industry in the world; indeed, Ginseng is a commodity the rest of the world should utilize.

Types of Ginseng

There are five recognized types of Ginseng;

–        Korean Red Ginseng: Considered the best for skin care

–        American Ginseng: Not used for skincare.

–        Indian Ginseng: mainly used to enhance the immune system, not for the skin.

–        Siberian Ginseng: Used to sustain the health

–        Panax Ginseng: Has anti-inflammatory benefits

Why is Ginseng worth all this hype?

According to 2017 research, Ginseng contains ginsenosides, which are considered potential nervous system regenerators. This makes it a neuroprotective element, and hence, it has many benefits for the skin.

Benefits of Ginseng to the skin

  1. It reduces signs of ageing, such as wrinkles: Studies have shown that women see a reduction in wrinkles after using Ginseng.
  2. It aids with collagen and skin elasticity: Ginseng helps to slow down collagen reduction. If collagen decreases, so does elasticity.
  3. Aids, inflammation and puffiness: According to the experts, puffiness is caused by poor circulation. Poor circulation can lead to fluid retention, aka puffiness. Ginseng helps to increase circulation while nourishing the skin with vitamins and minerals.
  4. Rich in Antioxidants: As you should know, antioxidants help protect the skin from harmful free radicals and premature ageing.
  5. Ginseng helps minimize pores. When pores are tighter and smaller, they improve the overall look and feel of the skin.
  6. Ginseng aids in strengthening and protecting the skin barrier. This ensures that your skin remains healthy and smooth.
  7. Skin lightening and brightening: Ginseng contains phytonutrients that help promote skin cell turnover. This reveals clearer, healthier skin by diminishing dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Ginseng is one of the most beloved K-beauty ingredients, and according to scientists, it is very deserving of that title.
