If you’re breaking out, you might want to take a good hard look at your diet. You might have heard that greasy foods can contribute to breakouts.

While there is some truth to that, and avoiding greasy food is a good idea, the relationship between diet and acne is more complicated than that. You need to read this if you have acne-prone skin and get a pimple every time you gobble up fried food.

What is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition. It occurs when oil glands located at the hair follicle become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Sometimes, bacteria that live on the skin can infect plugged follicles, leading to cysts, and other skin issues.

Acne most often develops on areas of the skin with more oil glands, such as the face, back, and chest.  Acne is very common and is estimated to affect almost 10% of the world’s population.

It is most common during the teen and young adult years, with as many as 85% of this population experiencing acne.

Relationship Between Fried Foods And Acne

Fried foods like chips, fries, patties, and donuts are made with saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, which make your skin produce more sebum. More oil on your skin results in more acne!

Also, these high-fat snacks have high salt or sugar content that affects your hormone levels and promotes acne development. To sum it all up, fried foods cause your skin to produce oil and, thus, flare-ups.

Typically, the more processed or refined a food, the more likely it is to cause breakouts. For example, foods with a high glycemic index — those that raise blood sugar very quickly — will affect two hormones, insulin, and testosterone,” explains Jennifer Hanway, a board-certified holistic nutritionist.

In addition, the relationship between the gut and the skin can also come into play. “Foods that trigger an inflammatory reaction in the gut can also lead to breakouts,” Hanway says.

“Again, a diet high in processed and refined foods can lead to increased intestinal permeability and an unhealthy microbiome, which can then create food intolerances and a chronic inflammatory response.” Acne, eczema, and rosacea flare-ups are all possible side effects of this inflammation.

Greasy Foods And Hormones

Eating foods high in unhealthy fats, like fatty and sugary foods, can also lead to spikes in blood sugar levels. This triggers a hormonal response, causing the body to produce more insulin, stimulating oil production in your skin, and contributing to acne development.

However, the extent to which greasy foods exacerbate acne may vary from person to person. Some individuals might experience acne breakouts after eating greasy foods, while others may not notice a significant impact on their acne.

Regardless of your body or skin type, it is generally advisable to reduce your greasy food intake. Just most times, swap that plate of chips for a bowl of fruit salad! Managing your skin health also comes with managing food consumption because health is wealth. Avoid any forms of sicknesses or weakness that would harm your health.
