According to a pulmonologist and medical director of the Northwell Health Sleep Disorder in the New York, snoring occurs when the tissue in the upper airway vibrates.

When we sleep, the muscles and soft tissue in the back of the throat relax and the airway can be obstructed, the vibration is what causes the noise.  He said that snoring generally worsens with age and men generally snore more than women at least until women reach menopause. Then it happens equally.

It is usually common in overweight persons because a larger neck circumference means narrower airways. Snoring can also be caused by other physical conditions like asthma, cold or sinusitis, a deviated septum.

2. Change sleep-position

A snorer should try not to sleep on his/her back. You can help your partner change position once it starts, don’t use your elbow to push him/her in the ribs.

3. Lose weight

According to SnoreLab, dropping a few pounds can drastically reduce normal snoring. It says that being obese can cause snoring and snoring can cause obesity. 

4. Avoid late night alcohol intake and abstain from smoking: The expert suggests that eating or alcohol intake should be put on hold at least for an hour before bedtime. Smoking causes nasal and lung congestion resulting in snoring.
