Sorry to burst your bubble, guys. You are not allowed to wear white, either. The same rules that bind the ladies also apply to the men. Your primary duty as a wedding guest is to support the couple and join in their happiness.

Wearing white to the occasion is one way of sabotaging that happiness. You must realize specific rules govern what you can wear to a wedding, so without mincing any more words, let us get into the dos and don’ts for men at any formal wedding.

Dos and Don’ts for Men’s Wedding Attire

    Rule #1

You should never wear full white to a wedding. It is considered rude.

    Rule #2

Avoid wearing the same color as the bridal or groom’s train, except you are a part of it.

    Rule #3

The three S’s are expressly forbidden: Shorts, slippers, and sandals. This can only be worn at a beach wedding.

    Rule #4

Do not wear any outfit that may bring too much attention, for example, funny-looking ties, coats, or huge top hats. The day is not for you; try to remember that.

    Rule #5

Follow the color codes on your wedding invitation; they are not there for decoration. Follow them to the letter; they are there for a reason.

    Rule #6

If in doubt, you can always ask: It is okay to call the couple and ask for suggestions. They will appreciate the courtesy and alleviate your worries.

These rules should be stamped in the recesses of your mind. Ensure you use them wisely.

When wearing white, it is okay.

Yes, wearing white to a wedding is a no-no, but it is not entirely impossible.

There are situations where the bridal party chooses to stray from the traditional white color. They may choose to be unique and ask the guests to wear white instead. In that case, wearing white is perfectly fine. Another situation would be wearing a white dress shirt underneath your suit.

So far as the suit is not white, and you keep your suit on, there should not be a problem. Let us say you have a multicolored shirt with a hint of white. So far as the primary color is not white, that should be okay, too.

It would help if you remembered that these rules do not exist to constrain you or make you unhappy. It is the least you can do on the couple’s special day. There are many other beautiful colors; staying away from white for just one day will not kill you.

Not wearing white to a wedding is a basic etiquette everyone should know. It demonstrates courtesy to the couple and their family. Indeed, as good guests and friends, it is the least you can do.
