Dehumidifiers do the work of taking out moisture from the air. They do this by pulling air into the system and drawing out the moisture over cold coils.
This moisture then becomes water via condensation, and this water is collected in the dehumidifier system. Before the collected air is pumped back out, it goes over hot coils and this air, on coming back into the room gives the room a normal temperature.
The process seems simple enough, and this really helps in climates with really high humidity. Dehumidifiers have their health benefits such as:

- It prevents moulds or mildew from forming in a house.
- It takes much-needed moisture out of the air in areas of high humidity.
- With less moisture in the air, bacteria that may inhabit the humid environments are not a threat anymore.
- Less moisture also means relief from allergies or asthma that could be worsened or triggered by high humidity.
Despite their health benefits, dehumidifiers can have certain unforeseen complications. One common dehumidifier malfunction is when you find a dehumidifier giving off very hot air. It should blow hot air, but when the air becomes too hot, it is a sign that something is not right.
How to stop dehumidifiers from blowing hot air
There are a few things you can try to stop your dehumidifier from blowing hot air. One of these solutions should solve this issue;
- Defreeze your humidifier: Sometimes, your dehumidifier may be frozen, which could be why it is suddenly blowing hot air. To fix this, thaw out the ice on your dehumidifier coils by putting the dehumidifier on fan only mode. This will turn off the compressor and allow the evaporator coils to defreeze. This can take you a few hours or a few minutes, depending on how much ice there is on the evaporator coils.
- Clean out the air filters: If your dehumidifier air filter is dirty, there will be a reduction in airflow through the dehumidifier. All that dust will make it difficult for the dehumidifier to blow air. That means the dehumidifier is not working properly. This may be the cause of the hot air coming out of the dehumidifier. To fix this, all you need to do is clean the air filters.
- Clean the coils on the dehumidifier: Just like the air filters, if the coils have excess dust on them, your dehumidifier can blow hot air, too. To fix this, gently disassemble your dehumidifier to get to the evaporator coils. Clean it gently with a small clean cloth or use a coil cleaning spray.
- The air is too warm: If the air in your room is too hot or warm, your dehumidifier will blow out hot air too. You could try opening your windows so as to moderate the air in the room.
Your dehumidifier could be blowing out hot air for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons have easy solutions, as described in this article. However if none of them work, then you should call a technician to take a look at it.
