Why do you feel nauseous after a tooth extraction?

Various factors may cause your urge to vomit after your tooth has been extracted. The most obvious factors are;

1. Stress and Anxiety: People react to being anxious or stressed in various ways. For some, it may cause an upset stomach and trigger nausea.

2. Swallowed Blood: Just the words alone are enough to trigger nausea, so you can imagine how much worse it gets when you actually swallow your own blood. Tooth extraction is a bloody affair, and you will definitely be swallowing your blood during the procedure, and you may have a little bleeding even after the procedure. All of this is completely normal and harmless, but it can make you feel nauseous.

3. Local Anesthesia: You will be given anesthesia prior to your tooth extraction, and one temporary side effect of anesthesia is an upset stomach and nausea.

Most times, the nausea you may feel after a tooth extraction subsides on its own after a short period. But if it persists, here are a few remedies you could try out;

1. Anti-nausea pills: These should be given to you by your dentist after the operation and should help relieve your nausea.

2. Staying hydrated and resting after your procedure helps to relieve the nauseated feeling you get in your stomach.

3. Taking a cup of ginger tea or peppermint tea hydrates you and calms down nausea. Carbonated drinks might work as well. However, do not take coffee if you were prescribed drugs.

4. Eat light meals after your operation. Your body shouldn’t be over-packed with food after your ordeal. Avoid spicy or acidic foods which tend to trigger or heighten nausea.

5. Strong odors and smells should be avoided as well.

6. Getting a gauze placed in the area of extraction will help to stop any further bleeding which will help alleviate nausea.

7. Taking your nausea pills without eating can trigger nausea as well. It would help if you tried taking something soft and cool before taking your medication.

8. Do not take Alcohol or smoke after your operation. It would help if you stayed away from both till your extraction site has healed.

Suppose your nausea persists after trying most or all of this. Then, it would be best to visit your dentist or the health facility closest to you.

Nausea is completely normal after a tooth extraction and may subside on it’s after a short period or with the help of any of the above remedies. However, if none of these remedies work, its best you visit your doctor.
