Skin tags form when additional cells develop in the skin’s upper layers. They form when the skin scrapes against itself, therefore they are more prevalent in persons who are overweight and hence have skin folds. They are more frequent in elderly persons and those with type 2 diabetes, and they grow in both men and women.

What Skin Tags Look Like and How to Spot Them

According to a doctor, skin tags can be as little as 1 millimetre or as large as 1 centimetre, and sometimes much larger. Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are generally flesh-coloured growths, however, some can be darker. They might be directly on the skin’s surface or appear to grow from a thin stalk of skin and dangle from the body.

They are most frequent on the neck, beneath the arms, in the groin, and on the eyelids because they develop in folds on the body, although they can arise everywhere. They normally do not grow in size once produced.

Causes of Skin Tags

It is unknown what produces skin tags, however, they may form when clusters of collagen and blood vessels become caught inside thicker portions of the skin. 

Some people appear to be predisposed to developing skin tags.

Skin tag affect both men and women but are common in pregnant women, obese people, and persons with diabetes.

They have been linked to hyperinsulinemia, a condition in which there is too much insulin in the blood.

Skin tag risk factors

Skin tags appear to be more frequent in the following populations:

individuals that are overweight or obese

women with diabetes during pregnancy, potentially owing to hormonal changes and high amounts of growth factors, and women with certain forms of human papillomavirus (HPV)

persons who have a sex-steroid imbalance, especially if there are variations in estrogen and progesterone levels

Those who have skin tags and have close relatives who also have skin tags

According to research, the following factors increase the likelihood of developing skin tags:

High cholesterol levels, for example, are a symptom of obese dyslipidemia.

High blood pressure is referred to as hypertension.

They have also been associated with insulin resistance and raised high-sensitive C-reactive protein, an inflammatory marker.

This shows that skin tags may serve as an external indicator of a higher risk of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease.

Skin Tags Removal

Skin tags can fall off in time effortlessly

If you decide to have a skin tag removed, for example, because it bothers you or you don’t like the way it looks, sees your doctor first.

Skin tags can easily be removed:

freezing them using liquid nitrogen, severing them with scissors or a scalpel, and burning them with electricity 

It’s not a good idea to try to remove skin tags on your own since they might bleed profusely or become infected. If you have a little skin tag, you might contact your doctor for instructions on how to remove it at home.

Skin tag home treatments

Skin tags normally do not necessitate treatment or a trip to the doctor. If you want to remove a tag, you might be able to do it using items already in your medical cabinet or kitchen. The majority of at-home cures include drying out the skin tag until it shrinks and comes off.

The oil of tea tree

When diluted in a carrier oil, tea tree oil, which has antiviral and antifungal qualities, is safe to use on the skin.

Wash the afflicted area first. Then, gently rub the oil over the skin tag using a Q-tip or cotton swab. Overnight, wrap a bandage around the affected region. Rep this process for a few nights, or until the tag dries out and slips off.

Banana Peel

If you have a skin tag, don’t throw away your old banana peels. A banana peel may also be used to help dry up a skin tag. This might be owing to the antioxidant characteristics contained in them.

Wrap a bandage over the tag and cover it with a piece of banana peel. Do this every night till the tag falls off.

ACV (apple cider vinegar)

Apply a cotton swab in apple cider vinegar and place it on the skin tag. Wrap the affected area with a bandage for 15 to 30 minutes before washing the skin. Repeat every day for a couple of weeks.

Apple cider vinegar’s acidity dissolves the tissue surrounding the skin tag, causing it to slip off.

vitamin E

Skin tags may be caused by a deficiency in vitamin E. Because vitamin E is an antioxidant that fights wrinkles and keeps the skin healthy, putting liquid vitamin E on a skin tag may cause it to disappear in a few days.

Massage the oil into the tag and the surrounding skin until it slips off.
