Shoes primarily have one purpose, to protect your feet. What do you know about footwears aside from wearing it?
Here are the fun facts.
1. Men started the fashion of high heels: Men were the first to wear high-heeled shoes. According to Slate, in the 10th-century men wore, especially those who rode horses.
The heels in their riding boots allow them to stay secure and stable in their saddle. Cowboys are a ready example. And since owning horses was a sign of wealth, heels became a signifier of aristocracy and high social standing, not gender.
2. Sneakers was coined because the rubber soles allow you to walk without making noise. With sneakers, you can sneak (er around).
“Sneaks” gave the term for “sneakers”.
3. Shoes were tied behind the car; In ancient times, brides’ father would provide their soon-to-be son-in-law with a pair of shoes this symbolises the transfer of authority.
A similar practice still happens today, where the shoes are tied to the back of the wedding car. It has a different meaning today-it means a journey to happiness.
4. Platform shoes were worn by Greek actors to signify superiority in ancient times. Platforms footwear was part of the costume used by the Greek actor to signify status and the comic actors would wear plain socks. With this, they are easily recognised by the audience.
5. The wedge shoes sprang up as a result of the economic restriction against Italy which resulted in closed trade between Italy and other countries.
This leads to the invention of wedge shoes by Salvatore Ferragamo (because he could no longer buy steel for his traditional heel) and it became accepted after a few weeks in the 1940s.
According to the fashion house’s website, Ferragamo wrote at the time, “I experimented with pieces of Sardinian cork, pushing and glueing and fixing and trimming until the entire space between the sole and the heel was blocked
solid.”
6. The largest high-heeled shoes measure 6ft 5” in length and 6ft 1” in height. And it was created by fashion designer Kenneth Cole and Today Show contributor Jill Martin in New York, USA.
