Sometimes the hardest thing to admit is that you don’t like the job you once desperately wanted.

You remember how excited you were when you got it.

You told your family.

You celebrated with your friends.

Maybe you had been unemployed for months. Maybe you had taken a pay cut to get in. Maybe moving into that role felt like proof that your life was finally moving forward.

So now, when you wake up on Monday morning and feel completely drained, you wonder:

“What’s wrong with me? I should be grateful.”

But gratitude doesn’t mean you have to pretend you’re happy.

A good job on paper can still be wrong for you

The salary might be good.

The company might have a great reputation.

Your colleagues might even be lovely.

But perhaps you’re constantly stressed.

Maybe there is no room to grow.

Maybe your manager makes every day difficult.

Maybe the hours are taking over your life.

Or perhaps you’ve simply changed.

The things you wanted five years ago may not be what you want now.

And that’s okay.

Don’t quit in frustration without a plan

Feeling unhappy at work doesn’t automatically mean you should hand in your notice tomorrow.

Sometimes the problem can be fixed.

Could you change teams?

Ask for flexible working?

Have a conversation with your manager?

Take some annual leave and properly switch off?

Or start looking for another role while keeping your current income?

You don’t have to make a dramatic decision just because you’re having a terrible Tuesday.

But you also shouldn’t ignore the feeling indefinitely.

Your career is allowed to change

Women often feel guilty about wanting something different.

Especially when they’ve worked hard to get where they are.

You might think:

“People would love to have my job.”

Maybe they would.

But they aren’t the ones doing it every day.

Your career doesn’t have to remain the same simply because you once worked hard to get there.

You can retrain.

Change industries.

Start a business.

Go part-time.

Move abroad.

Go back to school.

Or simply find a better company doing similar work.

Starting again isn’t necessarily going backwards.

Sometimes it’s finally moving in the right direction.

And remember who you’re working for

A job is supposed to support your life, not consume the entire thing.

Of course, there will be stressful periods.

Every job has them.

But if work is consistently affecting your sleep, relationships, confidence or ability to enjoy your life, it’s worth taking seriously.

You don’t have to stay somewhere forever because the salary is good.

And you don’t have to leave immediately because you’re unhappy.

You can quietly make a plan.

Update your CV.

Learn something new.

Build your savings.

Look at what’s available.

Then make your move when you’re ready.

Because sometimes the bravest career decision isn’t getting a better job.

It’s admitting that the job you once prayed for is no longer the life you want.
