After childbirth, most new mothers experience postpartum “baby blues,” which commonly include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety, difficulty breast-feeding, and other symptoms. The postpartum (or postnatal) period begins immediately after childbirth, when the mother’s body, including hormone levels and uterus size, returns to pre-pregnancy levels. This term is commonly used to describe the first six weeks after childbirth. Some mothers experience postpartum depression. Anxiety, sadness, frustration, tiredness, and overwhelm are common symptoms.
