It releases essential hormones in the body that are known as happy hormones. Examples of these hormones are dopamine, endorphins and oxytocin, which are also known as stress relievers.

Masturbation is also known for boosting self-esteem and inducing a good night’s rest. Scientist says that masturbation is more recommended than sleeping pills for a good night’s rest.

Although masturbation might have its good sides, just like everything else in life, it has its downsides as well. Here are the reasons why masturbation is bad for you;

  • Negative feelings concerning social and spiritual expectation

  • Excessive masturbation can lead to exhaustion, physical fatigue, etc.

Masturbation has been associated with many myths over the years. These myths mostly exist to discourage the act.

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Change in the size of the penis (reduction)

However, these myths are yet to be confirmed. 

Suppose you are concerned about your masturbation routine or you are worried that you depend on it excessively to feel better about yourself. In that case, you should either reduce or stop masturbating completely.

Steps to stop masturbating addiction

Too much of everything is not good. Just because there is a positive side to an action does not mean you should do it continuously till you become addicted. Masturbation addiction might not be registered as a mental disorder, but addiction still has negative effects on an individual. If you would like to stop, here are steps to follow in other to stop masturbating.

  1. Acceptance: You have to accept that masturbation is a bad thing that you have to move on from. Without acceptance, you will not see that there is a problem.
  2. Stop porn: Watching porn has been proven to be one of the major reasons for masturbation. Watching others in pleasure can be compelling to pleasure yourself. 
  3. Identify your triggers and eliminate them: Certain things lead you to masturbation. These are called triggers. Triggers differ among people, but the common ones are porn, sexual scenes or thinking about a certain sexual activity.
  4. Fill up your time: Busy People barely have time and room to think about sexual things. Get a hobby that might take your mind of it, get a skill and similar things like that.
  5. Join a support group: People tend to feel comfortable with others who have had similar issues and feel motivated by their success. Support groups are very helpful in situations like this.
  6. Contact professional help: You can always seek help from a therapist and doctors on matters like these.

Masturbation may seem harmless, but when you get addicted, that may lead to problems in every aspect of your life. It is best you realize you need to stop e and actually do something about it.
