You want to tread on the side of caution when it comes to the treatment of pimples or facials for acne as you embark on this nine-month journey.
According to Mayoclinic, some medications are known to cause birth defects and must be avoided during pregnancy. They include oral isotretinoin (Amnesteem, Claravis, others). Also, avoid topical retinoids during pregnancy even though only low amounts of the medication are absorbed into the skin. Retinoids are available with and without a prescription, so read drug labels carefully.
March of Dimes described pimples as one of the discomforts pregnant women go through. Pimples are common during the first and second trimesters. According to the moms and babies website, pimples may not cause you physical discomfort, but they may be annoying.
A facial pimple is a natural condition. The natural treatment (home remedies) is the safest because it has to do with application and not consumption.
If you’ve never had it, you may have a first time experience with it during pregnancy. If you’ve had it before pregnancy, it may get worse during pregnancy. We don’t know exactly why acne happens during pregnancy, but it’s probably because hormones changes.
Treatment
- Wash your face in the morning and night with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water.
- If your hair is oily, wash it with shampoo regularly, to reduce oil accumulation around your hairline.
- Apply oil-free moisturiser
- Don’t pick or squeeze or pop acne. This could lead to scarring.
- Use makeup that is oil-free. Look for the words water-based, noncomedogenic or non-acnegenic on the product label.
- Talk to your health care provider about the medicine you can take to treat acne. Don’t take any medicine, even with things as seemingly little as skincare without talking to your provider first.
- Some acne medications can be harmful to your baby. Some can cause birth defects.
- If you wear makeup, use products that are water-based rather than oil-based and that are labelled “noncomedogenic” or “non-acnegenic,” meaning they won’t clog your pores and cause breakouts. Be sure to wash your makeup off thoroughly before going to bed, too.
- Keep your hands off your face throughout the day.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Use clean pillowcases and towels.
