“Your hair is the crown that you never take off, take care of it”. The womenfolk, in the process of getting the best from our hair, we end up damaging it by following new hair trends. We sometimes allow our hairdresser to use tiny combs to comb our tangled hair, we even brush it wrong sometimes or don’t even brush it at all.
How do we get the best from our hair? How do we treat our hair correctly?
We will start with the best hair brush and combs to use for our afro-textured hair (the African woman’s hair). It is important to note that the African woman’s hair appears dense and is kinky until straightened or textured.
First, let us take a look at the types of hair that we have.
There are
• Type 1A, 1B & type 1C hair- this hair type is generally soft, oily, and hard to damage. The type 1b however, is fuller and has more volume than the 1A hair. The 1C hair is hard to curl, they term it bone straight. This hair type is the least afro-textured hair. African women who may have this type of hair are usually genetically mixed.
• Type 2a, 2b & 2c hair: Type 2 hair is naturally wavy. Again, African women with this hair are genetically mixed.
• Type 3a, 3b, and 3c hair: these are curly hairs and they tend to be frizzy. They may have a combination of textures, either finely textured or coarsely textured.
• Type 4a, 4b & 4c hair: This is the most afro-textured hair, also termed kinky curly. The 4a is tightly coiled and has an o pattern, the 4b has a z pattern but is loosely curled, and the 4c type has an “o” pattern just like the 4a hair but is only visible up close because it is very tightly curled.
If you want to determine your type of hair, take a strand of it when it is wet (your hair is in its most natural state when it is wet)
So, what type of brush should you use for your afro-textured hair?
- Afro-textured hair should use wide-tooth combs. These wide-tooth combs come in various sizes and styles. They are designed for long and thick hair that tangles easily, like the type 3 and 4 hairs. The tooth of these combs is spaced apart such that they can comb through the hair easily. When your hair is sopping wet or you just applied conditioner and you need to detangle, please, do not go in your hair with the rat tail comb with its fine teeth. Also, use this brush first whenever you want to comb your hair, dry or wet. Dear sis, if you just go at your hair with a rat tail comb (which is even for styling), your hair will break…. Go in with two different sizes of the wide-tooth comb, the wider-spaced one first, to detangle and the less-gaped one to smoothen, then rinse out the conditioner gently. Be sure to comb your hair from the ends to the roots (patiently). You get better results that way.
- Detangling brush: These brushes have soft and flexible teeth that won’t tear or break your hair. The teeth are further spaced apart. Use brushes like this when you want to pull hair in one place with a holding band.
- Tiny-boar bristle brushes: These are for flyaways or baby hair. Use this brush to smoothen the edges of your hair and apply gel to it. They give a smooth and clean finish. You can always take them in your handbag because the afro-textured hair never stays in place long enough.
Note; There is always a best hair brush for women
